Abstract

According to our current knowledge, diabetes mellitus is an incurable disease. After years of evolution, the patients develop chronic complications, the cardiovascular ones being extremely frequent and severe. It is estimated that the incidence of coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral artery disease is at least two times higher in diabetic patients as compared to non-diabetic subjects. Furthermore, these cardiovascular diseases cause almost half of the deaths of patients with diabetes mellitus.
